5 Crazy Facts About Labradors You Won't Believe
Think you know Labradors? These five things might change your mind.
1. They Nearly Went Extinct in The 1800’s
It sounds crazy, but it’s true: Labradors nearly disappeared in the 1800s.
In Newfoundland, families were taxed for owning dogs — especially females — to protect sheep farms.
Most people couldn’t afford them, and the breed almost died out.
But lucky for us, British hunters brought a few home.
They even named them “Labrador,” unknowingly saving the world’s favourite dog.
So yes — Britain doesn't just love Labs. We saved them. 🐾🇬🇧

2. The 3rd Oldest Dog Ever Was a Labrador
Most Labs live around 12 years — but one made it all the way to 27.
His name was Adjutant. He was born in 1936, and served as a gamekeeper’s dog in the UK.
He lived a full, working life until 1963.
Clearly, something in his routine was working.
So if you’ve got a Lab snoozing at your feet… who knows?
You might be raising a little legend of your own. 🐶💛
(The oldest was a Aussie Cattle Dog called Bluey, lived to 29)
3. Not Greedy, Just Genetically Starving
If your Lab is a bottomless pit — it could be their DNA.
Scientists discovered a 'hungry gene' that makes some Labs hungry all the time.
About 1 in 4 have the hungry gene.
So that desperate look after dinner?
They’re not faking it. 🐶🍽️

4. Chocolate Labs Live Shorter Lives (and Get More Ear Infections)
Chocolate Labs are gorgeous—no doubt about it.
But a large UK study looked at 33,320 Labradors, and found something surprising:
Chocolate Labs live nearly 10% shorter than black or yellow Labs.
On average, they live 10.7 years, compared to 12.1 for others.
The same study found they’re twice as likely to suffer from ear infections and skin issues.
Why? Likely genetics — breeding for that rare chocolate coat passes on health problems.
It doesn’t mean your Lab is unhealthy.
But it does mean they need a little more care — especially when it comes to skin, ear, and immune health.

5. Labs Can Sprain Their Tails from Wagging
It’s called limber tail, and yes...
It happens when Labs wag too hard or after a cold swim.
Their tail goes limp, like a sad little noodle.
It looks dramatic, but it’s harmless and clears up with rest.
Only a Lab could love you so much it hurts. 💛
